Obituary

Middlebury, VT Wilma Martin McCartney Wilma M. McCartney, 85, died Thursday morning April 27, 2006 at her residence in Middlebury. She was born November 25, 1920 in Newark, NJ the daughter of the late William H. & Ethel N. (Whittles) Martin. Wilma was a graduate of Prospect Hill School, in Newark, NJ and also graduated from Wheaton College, in Norton, Ma. During World War II Wilma served with the Special Services, U.S. Army at Camp Claiborn, Louisiana. After the war she entered the Public Recreation field to become the Director of Recreation in Hackettstown, NJ. Later she worked with her husband more many years throughout his career in the hotel and restaurant industry as a baker. Wilma published her own cook book Ring the Doorbell with Your Elbow. She served as director of the Education of Vermont Poison Control Center, at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. Wilma was active with the Middlebury Community Players, Wellesley Players, and was a avid hospital volunteer, past president of Porter Hospital Auxiliary, past president of the medical Center Hospital of Vermont Auxiliary and served as a member of the Board of Governors at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, she was an active fund raiser for Porter Medical Center, the Vermont Symphony and Wheaton College Alumni Association. She is survived by her son, William M. McCartney, of Whitefield, NH, her two grandchildren, Elizabeth M. McCartney and William S. McCartney, both of Whitefield, NH, her sister Claire M. Calhoun, of Mantoloking, NJ and by her beloved nieces & Nephews. She was predeceased by her Husband Sidney Wicks McCartney who died August 17, 2002. A Memorial service will be held May 13, 2006 at 11 AM at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Middlebury.
