MIDDLEBURY- Walter E. Peck, 84, a resident of Middlebury for many years, died Sunday, April 17, 2011 at his home with his wife and his caregivers by his side.
Born in Middlebury November 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Walter E., Sr. and Margaret (Payment) Peck.
Walt grew up on the Peck family farm in New Haven where he attended the Beeman Academy. During WWII, at the age of 17, he left the Green Mountain State to serve in the United States Army, where he was sent to the island of Okinawa. After the war he returned to Middlebury where he worked as an auto body repairman. He then worked for 14 years for Central Vermont Public Service. Walt left CVPS to become an electrician under the supervision of Walter Calhoun. In 1968 he started Walter Peck Electric Inc. which he owned and operated until 1985. In 1990 he sold his business to his son, Glen.
Walt was a member of the East Middlebury United Methodist Church where he volunteered his time and talents for many church projects.
Walt was a lifelong avid hunter. He hunted deer in the mountains of Maine, Montana, Colorado, Ohio, Ontario, Vermont and New York. He lived for both the hunt and a good hunting story. He enjoyed the camaraderie of others, had a quick, sharp sense of humor and was good natured in his relationships. Even in his decline he continued to connect with his buddies from his years at CVPS by attending coffee hour on Friday mornings at Rosies.
Surviving family members include his wife, Jean (Norton) Peck whom he married September 19, 1953, two sons, Glen D. Peck and his wife Lynne of Weybridge and W. Reid Peck and his wife Crystal Jackson of Weybridge; one brother, Charles H. Peck of Burlington; one sister, Jean Cyr of Middlebury; three grandchildren, Lauren Peck, Nathan Peck and Sky Jackson; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Bromley and Elizabeth Peck.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 on Wednesday April 27, 2011 at the New Haven Congregational Church with the Rev. Ed Hilbert and Rev. Jill Robinson presiding. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven.
