Obituary

WALTER BORDEN III ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA- Walter E. Borden, III, died Wednesday, August 9, 2006, in a motor vehicle accident in Middlebury, VT. Born May 5, 1923 in Goldsboro, NC, he was the son of the late Walter E. Jr. and Ethel (Miller) Borden. He was a graduate of Phillips-Exeter Academy, Exeter, NH, class of 1942. He received his Bachelor of Science and masters in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During WW II he served in the United States Navy as a Ltjg. He was a retired Chemical Engineer and Financial Analyst for Exxon. For many years he has summered in Brandon, VT and wintered in GA. He was a member of the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Church and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Coastal, GA. Very involved in community service, he worked in Habitat for Humanity in Vermont and Georgia. He was a member of the Red Cross Disaster Team in GA, the National Audubon Society and other environmental organizations. He helped build the Lois McClure at the Champlain Valley Maritime Museum. He traveled extensively and with Bird Quest. Family members include his wife of 59 years, Margaret F. Margot (Fenn) Borden of Brandon, VT and St. Simons Island, GA; one son, Curtis M. Borden and his fiance, Anneliese Brooks of Weybridge, VT; two daughters, Laurie B. Ahearn and her partner, Richard ODonohue of Weybridge, VT and Sally E. B. Buteau and her husband Brian of Ripton, VT; one brother, Peter Borden of Washington State; three sisters, Anna Sides of Palm City, FL, Martha Moss of Asheville, NC, and Ethel Wood of Carmel Valley, CA; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. There will be no memorial service. Private services will take place at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA. Messages of condolence may be sent to Margot Borden, c/o Laurie B.
