Obituary

Dr. Theodore Gates Brown, Jr. died peacefully on Friday, August 31, 2007 after a long illness at Shard Villa in Salisbury where he was cared for during the last five years. Dr. Brown was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 29, 1920, the son of Theodore Gates Brown, Sr. and Irene (Phinney) Brown. He grew up in Manchester, Connecticut. He attended Cornell University as an engineering student and while there he played on the men's basketball team and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. World War II interrupted his college career, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was trained as an operating room technician. He was stationed in the South Pacific at naval air station units in the Solomon Islands where he served as a hospital corpsman. Following his return to Oakland, California he married Virginia May Holmes, of Troy, NY in 1945. He then attended the University of Tennessee where he earned an A.B. and an M.S. degree in Zoology and Chemistry in 1950. He earned a PhD degree in pharmacology at the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston in 1956. Ted Brown had a long career as a pharmacologist conducting and directing biomedical and preclinical research. He worked at the Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in Rensselear, New York and with Rohm & Haas Co. in Columbus, Ohio and Philadelphia, PA. After taking early retirement in 1978, he and his wife, Ginna Brown, settled in Middlebury while he continued working for ten years as an independent consultant to pharmaceutical companies developing drugs for cancer treatment. He also pursued his interest in medical history of Vermont and participated in the UVM College of Medicine's medical history group. Ted was an active volunteer in the Middlebury community. He was involved with the Henry Sheldon Museum, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science's education program at the Mary Hogan School and he served as President of the Friends of Ilsley Library. Ted had a life long interest tin theology and was a lay speaker in the Methodist Church, an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and during retirement in Middlebury, he lead adult education classes at the Congregational Church. His love, enjoyment and concern for his family were always central to his life. Ted is survived by his wife Virginia (Ginna) Holmes Brown of Middlebury and their five children: Adrienne (Rickie) L. Howard of Chapel Hill, NC, her husband Dr. James F. Howard, Jr. and their children Meghan Louise Howard and Jeffrey Gates Howard; Theodore Gates Brown, III of San Francisco, CA and his wife Carol Jue; Lesley I. B. Schless of Old Greenwich, CT, her husband Eric H. Schless and their children Karina Holmes Schless, Lesley Isabelle D. Schless and Hendrik (Hank) Hugh Schless; Alison Gates Brown of Baltimore, MD, her husband Dr. Ken Kolodner and their children Bradley Nathan Kolodner and Hillary Gates Kolodner; Deborah Holmes of Weybridge, VT, her husband Timothy Larrabee Short and their children Cameron Holmes Russell, Andrew MacKenzie Russell, Samuel Homes Short and Lewis Holmes Short. Ted Brown is also survived by his brother Rhoderick E. Brown and his wife Jane of Hendersonville, NC and by his sister Janet Burns Loihle of Lakeland, FL. A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 11 AM in the United Methodist Church of Middlebury. A reception following the service will be held at 23 Seminary Street in Middlebury. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanderson Funeral Service 117 South Main Street Middlebury, VT.
