Obituary

Burlington/Middlebury Stanley S. Stefanski Stanley Stephen Stefanski, 82, left his family on Earth to join his wife, Adeline Frietas, on Friday, July 18, 2008 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Stanley had been a resident of St. Josephs Home for the aged in Burlington, Vermont, for the past four years. During those four years, Stanley considered the St. Josephs residents and staff an integral part of his extended family. Stanley was born in Bangor, ME on September 29th, 1925 to Stephen & Josephine (Smith) Stefanski. He graduated from Brewer High School in 1943 and during WW II joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Yeoman, 2nd Class. He also attended Bentley College for 2 years in Boston, MA. On August, 2nd 1947, he married Adeline Frietas in Brewer Maine and they were married for 56 years until her death in 2003. During his life time, Stanley worked as a salesman for various businesses and in 1964 purchased his own Grocery Business in Middlebury, VT, naming it Stans IGA. In the early 1980s he sold the business and it is presently know as Gregs Market. Stanley was an active member of the Knights Of Columbus at St. Marys Church, the V.F.W. And the American Legion Post # 49 of Middlebury, and served in many capacities in these organizations while residing in Middlebury. He will always be remembered as a kind person with a great sense of humor. In his later years, he enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, Jack and Bud and walking his dog Buddy around the town of Middlebury. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and his family is considered his legacy. Stanley is survived by one brother, John Stefanski, of Norridgewock, ME, 7 Children, Susan Bigelow of Rogers, AR, Sandra Riccio-Spear, of Colchester, VT, Karan Stefanski, of Cornwall, VT, Michael Stefanski, of Hernando, MS, Stephen Stefanski, of Hudson, MA, Lisa Richards, of Beaverton, OR, and Tara S. Nelson, of Foster, RI., his fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Adeline (Freitas) Stefanski who died November 14, 2003, his two brothers and his parents. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to St. Josephs and the V.N.A. Staff for making our fathers last few months so comfortable and memorable. Words can not describe how grateful our family is for the compassion and love shown to our father during his time of illness. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to ones of these two wonderful organizations. There will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 11 AM at St. Marys Catholic Church. The Rev. William Beaudin will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery.
