Robert Francis Cartland died December 18th, 2005 in Middlebury, Vermont. He was born November 13th, 1906 in Derby Vermont to Lawrence and Frances Cartland.
He was educated at Jericho Corners School and Jericho Center High School. He also took many correspondence courses including Sign & Show Card Lettering, Store Window Merchandise Display and Store Interior Decorating.
Robert was employed by J.C. Penny and Montgomery Wards in the North East. He was also manager of Brown McDonald Department Stores in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado in the Mid West. He then purchased The Grey Shop in Middlebury. Robert also served one year in the military with the 250th Engineers Combat Battalion. He was a current member of the American Legion and a member of the Libanus Lodge #47 F & AM and a 32nd degree Mason with the Valley of Burlington Scottish Rites and a member of the Vermont Consistory, and a member of Cairo Temple of Rutland. He was also a Green Mountain Boy and a member of the Middlebury Congregational Church where he was a Deacon. He was a former member of the Middlebury Lions Club and the Rotary Club.
Robert is survived by his wife Marion whom he married June 17th, 1961 and his many nieces & nephews.
He was predeceased by two wives Zella Shedd Cartland, and Ethelyn Langdin Cartland, one sister, Evelyn McNally, a half sister Jessie Hitchcock and one half brother Harley Sherman.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2006 at 1 PM at the Middlebury Congregational Church. The Rev. Marthinus Rickert pastor of the Middlebury Congregational Church will officiate.
Private Burial will take place at a later date.
In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Robert may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children c/o Charles Baker 51 Washington Street, Rutland, Vermont or to the Addison County Home Health and Hospice at P.O. Box 754 Middlebury, Vermont or to the Middlebury Congregational Church 27 North Pleasant Street, Middlebury.
