The Reverend Dr. Leon M. Adkins, Jr. passed away peacefully October 25th, 2018 at his home surrounded by his wife Bonnie, family and friends. He was born in East Greenwich, Rhode Island in 1926. He is survived by his wife Bonnie Totten Adkins and his sister Rachel Platt-Donovan (Andrew) of Pittsford NY, his children Mark Adkins (Susan) of Charlton NY, Grant Adkins (Norma) of Galway NY, Rachel Adkins (Doug) of Little River SC, and David Adkins (Margaret) of Voorheesville NY and Bonnie's three daughters Carrie Au (Ben) of Austin TX, Deborah Novelli (Chad) of Brooktondale NY, and Daveyne Totten of Middlebury VT as well as eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his first wife of 39 years, Molly Hemeon Adkins, and his brother Donald Adkins. Reverend Dr. Adkins was a scholar and graduate of Middlebury College, Boston University and Drew University and had served as a minister and teacher at churches in New York State for over forty years with congregations in Fort Johnson, Newtonville, Scotia, Delmar and Schenectady, NY. He also served as a District Superintendent for the Troy Conference of the United Methodist Church. After his time as a pastor, Lee and Bonnie served as directors of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) managing relief operations across the globe. He led volunteer missions with the General Board of Global Ministries to sites in the United States, Hungary, Philippines, Mozambique, Guatemala, Bosnia and Ireland. Two Memorial services are scheduled for Tuesday, October 30th at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of Middlebury, Vermont and Sunday, November 4th at 1:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church of Schenectady, New York. Memorial contributions to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated. The family wishes to thank the staff at Eastview at Middlebury for their care and dedication.
