Middlebury, VT Phyllis Burke Cunningham
Phyllis Burke Cunningham died peacefully on October 14, 2011, with family by her side.
She was born in Albany New York, April 29th, 1926. The daughter of John and Lois Gardiner Burke of Middlebury, Vermont.
She was a graduate of Middlebury High School and Middlebury College, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Following graduation from college in 1947, she taught English at Randolph and Middlebury High Schools.
In 1948 she married William J. Cunningham, an Air Force veteran and also a graduate of Middlebury College. She retired from teaching from 1955 to 1964 to devote time to her family. In 1964 she returned to teaching English at Bristol and Middlebury High Schools. From 1969 until her retirement from teaching in 1985, she was librarian at Mt. Abraham Union High School.
Throughout Phyllis life, she was devoted to her friends, family and community. In her adult years she was active in The Business and Professional Womens Clubs, AAUW, Porter Hospital Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma, DAR, and Retired Teachers of Addison County. Phyllis became actively involved in Special Olympics with son Chris, a Special athlete. In retirement she volunteered at the Sheldon Museum and served on the Community House board. In 2001 she was initiated into the MHS-MHUS Hall of fame.
She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1995, by their son Chris in 2001 and by her son-in-law Duncan Rosborough in January of 2011. She was also predeceased by her sister Joyce Stout of Salem, New York, by her brother John Burke of Londonderry, NH, and her mother and father Lois and John Burke of Middlebury, VT.
She is survived by her son William and his wife Heidi and her granddaughter Lindsay Cunningham of Woodstock, VT, by her son Robert and his wife Donna and her grandson Bobby and granddaughter Laura Cunningham of Windham, NH, by her daughter Anne and granddaughters Ashley and Kaylie Rosborough of Mount Desert, ME, and her son Steven and his wife Stephanie and her grandson Colton and granddaughter Rachel of Stowe, VT.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday October 18, 2011 from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, Located at 117 South Main Street, Middlebury.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday October 19, 2011 at 2 P.M. at the Middlebury Congregational Church. The Rev. Andy Nagy-Benson will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MHS-MHUS Alumni Scholarship fund P.O. Box 1034 Middlebury, VT 05753 or to the Addison County Special Olympics C/O Special Olympics Vermont- Addison, 132 Peterson Terrace Middlebury, VT 05753.
