Paul Saenger, 59, died Sunday evening, Oct 5, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 30, 1955 in Belleville, IL, Paul grew up in Millstadt, Il and maintained his childhood friendships throughout his life. He was the son of the late Fredrick O. and Irma (Wittmer) Saenger. Paul earned his BA and MS from the University of Illinois and PhD from Purdue University where he again made friendships that lasted until the end. He came to Vermont in 1982 where he had a teaching, research, and extension position at UVM. Five years later, he was able to retire from UVM to pursue his passion for farming. In 1988, Paul and Rene moved to Shoreham and with the help of an amazing crew of people built Cream Hill Farm into the largest beef feeding facility in the Northeast. In 2006, Paul discovered his final passion, that of Lake Champlain history and the Carillon cruise boat. His Facebook page filled with history, stories and pictures was followed by many.
Pauls passions defined who he was. His passion for his family was endless. His passion for his town evident in his role as Selectboard Chair and his decision to run each year on a 1 year appointment. His resignation two weeks ago emphasized his pride in the residents of this town. He was a director of Yankee Farm Credit, his relationship with the Middlebury Office meant much to him.
Surviving family members include his wife Rene M. (White) Saenger whom he married November 22, 1980; two sons, Benjamin F. Saenger of Burlington, VT and Andrew M. Saenger of Lafayette, IN; two daughters, Laura M. Saenger and her husband Patrick OLeary of Washington, DC and Amy M. Saenger of Waltham, MA; one sister Sharon Leonard of Southgate, MI and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private family services will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
