Obituary

Patricia McCarthy Whitney, 81, died Sunday March 25, 2007 at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington. Born March 18, 1926 in Newmarket, NH, she was the daughter of the late J. Albert and Gertrude Leever McCarthy. Patricia was a graduate of Rutland High School, Boston University (Batchelor of Science in Home Economics), Tufts University, (Masters of Education) and also did a dietary internship at the New England Medical Center, Boston, MA. Among her many accomplishments as a teaching dietician, she developed nutrition education programs at New England Medical Center. She was instructor of Foods and Nutrition at the University of Rhode Island, Department Chairman and Assistant Professor of Foods and Nutrition at Middlebury College; and Professor of Nutrition at the University of Vermont where she developed a program integrating nutrition and diet therapy into the nursing curiculm. She was dietary consultant for Porter Medical Center in Middlebury and was instructor of nutrition for the Vermont Department of Health. She married Julius W. Whitney in 1963, the owner of Park Drug Store in Middlebury, who predeceased her January 30, 1995. Pat was a member and past president of the Middlebury Garden Club and was an honorary member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont. She was a member of the Vermont Chapter of the Society of Colonial Dames and the American Dietitian Association. Family members include one sister, Priscilla McCarthy Morse of Rutland; neices and nephew include Brenda Lewis of Green Bay, WI, Christine Yesse of Troy, NY, Susan Kuhn of Haymarket, VA and Dr. Richard A. Morse of Hanover, NH. In addition to her husband, Pat was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Mavis M. Bailey. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Sunday, April, 2007 at the Salisbury Congregational Church, Main St. Salisbury, with the Rev. John Grivetti, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in West Side Cemetery, Salisbury. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Salisbury Congregational Church or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanderson Funeral Service, Middlebury.
