Mildred H. Baker passed away at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, VT early Sunday morning on September 11, 2011.
Mildred was born in Salisbury, VT on August 14, 1921 to James E. and Martha(Kemp) Hodges. The family soon moved to Ripton, VT where her father ran a sawmill. She attended Goddard Seminary for Girls in Barre. She went to work as an aide to Col. Frank Scott and his wife, Dulcie, who summered at Deacon Hill in Breadloaf and lived the rest of the year in Mentor, Ohio. A brief marriage during the war ended in divorce.
During her summers back at Breadloaf, Mildred met Howard(Buck) Baker. They eloped to Wrightstown, NJ in 1948 and returned to settle in Ripton. Mildred was very involved in the community, representing town as a member of the school committee, cooking hot lunch and being the school bus driver. In 1954, they moved to New Haven to the little farm on the River road where they enjoyed many years, raising their three daughters.
In the late 1940s, Mildred went to work for the Van Raalte Company as a seamstress where she met many of her lifelong friends. When that company was closed, she worked at Simmonds Precision Products. For several years, she was the bookkeeper at Goodro Lumber Company. From 1984 to 1993, Mildred was the Director of the Middlebury Community House. She was immensely proud to be a steward for the lovely historic home and studied the history in depth so that she could bring the house alive during the many historic tours that she led.
One of Mildreds greatest joys was traveling both in this country and abroad. She went to Hawaii, California and the Southwest, and many many excursions to Ohio and up and down the the east coast. Oberammergau, Germany to see the Passion Play and a trip to Ireland along with four cruises to the Caribbean kept her busy once she retired.
Mildred will be remembered for her generous and giving ways, always having a batch of beans ready to give to families in times of sorrow. A fabulous cook, she made many cakes and soups that she shared with her friends at the Commons when she lived there.
Mildred is survived by her daughter Nancy E. Guenther of Quincy, MA, her daughter Luciann B. Torrey and her husband Aubert of Addison and her beloved grandson, Jeremy H. Torrey of Burlington. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to especially thank the staff for the loving care that was given to Mildred at Shard Villa where she lived for the past two years as her health was failing.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Marys Church of the Assumption, College St. Middlebury on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 11AM with the Rev. William R. Beaudin, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery, Middlebury.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, September 13, 2011 from 4-8PM at Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, 117 S. Main St. Middlebury.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Shard Villa, 1177 Shard Villa Road, Salisbury, VT.
