Obituary

WALTHAM Michael "Mike" W. Furey died suddenly at home on April 7, 2017, on his 74th birthday. Son of William and Lillian Furey (ne Heim), Michael was born in Philadelphia. He attained a Bachelors and Masters degree in Civil Engineering from Villanova University. He married Charlotte Harding of Burlington Vermont in 1968 and they had 3 children, Michael, Charlotte and Christopher. Education was very important to Mike. His eldest two children were graduates of Middlebury College, and his youngest was a Trustee scholar of the University of Southern California. After a very successful 25+ year career in commercial real estate development in Philadelphia, Mike followed his dream of moving from Berlin, New Jersey to Vermont. In 1998, he bought a farmhouse in Waltham and embraced a second career as a real estate appraiser. An avid skier and sailor throughout his life, Mike had a ski house at Mount Snow, kept his sailboat at Ocean City, New Jersey, and was a member of the Basin Harbor Club on Lake Champlain for many years. An expert craftsman, Mike loved nothing more than bringing Vermont antiques back to life in his workshop. In later years, Mike fell in love with travelling internationally with his family to Asia, Europe, The Caribbean and South America. This included a trip to attend the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with his daughter, a lifelong dream of them both. Adored by his family and adoring them in return, Mike is predeceased by his son, Michael W. Furey Jr. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte H. Furey of Waltham; his children Christopher H. Furey of Portland, Oregon and Charlotte A. Furey of San Francisco, California. He is also survived by his sister Denise Furey of Philadelphia, as well as many other beloved family members and relations by marriage. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 12, at St. Mary's Parish, 326 College Street, Middlebury, VT; at 10:00 a.m. with visiting hours from 9:30 to 9:50 A.M. Mike donated anonymously to many charities and spent almost a decade on the board of the Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC). Supporting the community was very important to both Mike and his surviving wife, Charlotte. Donations to CSAC can be made online at http://www.csac-vt.org/ or via mail to CSAC, 89 Main Street, Middlebury, VT 05753. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home.
