EAST MIDDLEBURY- Mary Jo Richards, 76, a longtime resident of East Middlebury, died Monday, January 23, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born November 26, 1935 in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Josephine (Georgius) Thompson.
Mary Jo married her husband, Alden C. Richards on August 25, 1955.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be dearly missed, Mary Jo served her community as librarian for 12 years and delivered Meals on Wheels for over 30 years. Among her hobbies were quilting and teaching quilting at Frog Hollow, volunteering at the Addison County Humane Society and was active in Doberman Rescue. She enjoyed playing bridge, was a voracious reader, an EBay enthusiast and was a treasure hunter extraordinaire.
Mary Jo was an active member of the East Middlebury United Methodist Church. She did hospice volunteering for several years.
In addition to her husband of 56 years, she is survived by four daughters, Jo Annette Grisham and her husband Jonathan of Shickshinny, PA, Carolyn A. MacFarlane and her husband John of Sterling, VA, Teresa L. Fox and her husband Michael of Pasadena, MD, and Candace M. Richards of East Middlebury; one son, Timothy J. Richards and his wife Linda of Milton Mills, NH; two brothers, Joseph Thompson, Jr. of Mechanicsville, MD and William Thompson of Hollywood, MD; two sisters, Anne Hopf of Stillwater, PA and Teresa Beck of Port Republic, MD; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Valerie Jordan.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11AM Friday January 27, 2012 at the East Middlebury United Methodist Church with Rev. Elisabeth Smith, pastor, officiating. A celebration of her life will take place in the spring.
