Weybridge-Marjorie B. Nelson, 86, died Monday, May 28, 2007 at Porter Hospital after a brief illness.
Born April 5, 1921 in Amsterdam, NY she was the daughter of the late, Harold W. and Jane (Geddis) Bishop.
She grew up and attended schools in Amsterdam, NY, then studied at New York State College for Teachers in Albany, NY, receiving her B.A. in 1942. After teaching Latin and French at Tannersville Central School in Tannersville, NY for one year, she joined the U.S. Navy WAVES and served as communications officer at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, FL from 1943 until 1946. After her discharge from the service, she attended Middlebury College and received her M.A. in French in 1947. It was during this time she met her future husband, Walter J. "Duke" Nelson. They married in 1948. She taught Latin and French at Cornwall High School, Cornwall, NY for one year. They lived in Middlebury for the next four years before buying a house in Weybridge where they raised their children and lived the rest of their lives. During the time when she worked as a homemaker and mother, Marjorie also served on the Board of Directors of Otter Valley School, East Middlebury which was a school for developmentally disabled children and Weybridge Elementary School. She returned to teaching full time in 1967, teaching Latin and French at Middlebury Union High School until 1976. She then worked as a serials assistant at Starr Library at Middlebury College. after retiring in 1987, she did volunteer work at Addison County Community Action Group clothing room and at Weybridge School Library for several years.
Marjorie was an intelligent woman who in addition to her interest in languages, greatly enjoyed literature and music, especially, classical music, but also jazz and popular songs of her youth and young adulthood.
She had a lifelong love of nature, which was expressed in her love of birds and animals as well as her enjoyment of wildflowers and attention to her perennial flowers and shrubs and vegetable garden.
She was a member of Otter Creek Audubon Society and was involved in fund raising for Otter View Park, Middlebury.
She is survived by her sister, Doris Mae Holik of Amsterdam, NY and her three children; John Nelson of Pesotum, IL, Janet Nelson of Weybridge, and Harry Nelson and his wife, Helen of Old Chatham, NY.
She was predeceased by her daughter Christina and her husband Walter.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 1 PM at Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society Meeting House, Cross St.,Middlebury.
