Marjorie L. Covey died, after a long battle with colon cancer, at her home in Middlebury, VT, on September 20th, 2013, just 4 days shy of her 94th birthday. Born in West Brattleboro, VT, to Justin and Myrtle (Briggs) Dix, Marge was a multi-generation Vermonter. She grew up the only girl among 8 siblings in the Dix family. A graduate of Brattleboro High School and Castleton State College, Marge obtained her teachers certificate and initially taught grades 1 through 8 in a one room school house in Barnard, VT. This was followed by several years at The Academy School in West Brattleboro, VT, where she taught 5th grade, alongside some of those who had previously taught her. Although her full time teaching career ended with her marriage to Wilton W. (Bud) Covey, M.D. on June 16th, 1944, she continued to substitute teach from time to time for many years. She also enjoyed many church and community volunteer activities, highlights of which included Milton PTA, the Middlebury chapter of United Methodist Women, Elderly Services/Project Independence, Counseling Service of Addison County (where she served as a member of the Board of Directors for several years), and Sheldon Museum, where she was a docent/tour guide. She was a member of the Middlebury United Methodist Church for the last 47 years of her life. After the Dayton Accords ended the Bosnian War the previous fall, Marge and her husband traveled in the spring of 1996, to a small Muslim community in Bosnia with Volunteers in Mission. This trip, dedicated to rebuilding and restoring homes damaged or destroyed by that war, was a physically and emotionally demanding experience, given her age of 76 years. But it proved tremendously rewarding and in retrospect she always viewed it as one of the most significant events of her life. She was active subsequently in facilitating the settlement of several Bosnian families in the Middlebury area. Marge and Bud celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this past summer. Her primary focus and her greatest pride was always her family, and she devoted the majority of her life and energy to the care and development of all its members. Her sons, Alan and Eric, along with their wives, Wendy and Helen, live in Middlebury. Laird and his wife Marcy live in Poland, ME and Pittsford, VT, and Mark and his wife, Judy, live in Exeter, NH. She took special joy in her 8 grandchildren - Ethan (and wife Eliza Stamps), Wesley, Justin, Erin, Chris, Cara, Kelly and Casey. She was pre-deceased by her seven brothers, Millington, Harvey, Bernard, Kelly, Wendell, Chester and Jerold, as well as her son Ross, who died in infancy. A memorial service will be held at a future date at the Middlebury United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Elderly Services/Project Independence (P.O.
