Vergennes, VT Mrs. Marian E. Smith Mrs. Marian Emily Newton Smith, 90 formerly of Ripton, passed away at the home of Bernadette Laberge early Saturday morning May 31, 2008. She was born March 28, 1918 in Georgia, VT the daughter of the late Alan & Gertrude (Ladd) Newton. Marian served the town of Ripton for many years, serving as town clerk & treasurer, Lister and also as a school board member. She married Howard M. Smith on August 15, 1943. He predeceased her in March of 1989. Marian is survived by her five children, Alan M. Smith Sr. & his wife Linda, of Lincoln, Howard E. Smith & his wife Jeanette, of Zephyrhills, FL, Theresa A. Sullivan & her husband Michael, of Salisbury, Claudia G. Shain & her husband Lindsey, of Brandenburg, and Dorothy Gelinas, of Ripton. Also by her brother, Philip Newton & his wife Pat, of Michigan, by her sisters, Helen Wilson & her husband Leonard, of Arizona, Betty Steinburg, of North Dakota, and Louise Bashaw, of St. Albans. Also by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Per Marians wishes there will be no calling hours or services.
