Margaret Annette Palmer Payne Robbins
Margaret A. Payne Robbins died February 2, 2006 in Middlebury after a long illness. She was born Margaret A. Palmer on April 10, 1911 in Weybridge, VT, the daughter of Roy and Carrie (Hunt) Palmer.
She is survived by her brother Harold of Williston, sister Elizabeth Austin of Middlebury, daughter in law Joan Bingham of Cornwall; 4 grandsons, Stephen, Bruce and Jim of Cornwall and David of Crown Point, NY; 1 granddaughter, Susan Payne Bruce of Middlebury, 8 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; 5 nieces and 1 nephew.
She was predeceased by her brother William, sisters Katharine and Marion, husbands Ralph Payne, Sr. and Rodney Robbins and son Ralph, Jr.
Margaret grew up on dairy farms and began a milk route delivering her fathers fine Jersey milk around Middlebury, even through the 1927 flood. This eventually grew into Palmers Dairy, operated by her brother and then nephew for many years.
While attending Middlebury High School, Margaret boarded in the Sheldon Museum, which at that time rented rooms to out of town students. This allowed her to always laughingly refer to herself as a real museum piece. She graduated from MHS in 1928.
She married Ralph Albert Payne, Sr. in 1930 and then lived and worked on the family farm in Cornwall, VT until Ralphs death in 1965. She operated the farm for more than a year by herself, before selling it to care for her mother for the next 11 years and working for several years at the Deweys Woolen Shop in Middlebury. Margaret married E. Rodney Robbins of Cornwall in 1984. He died in 2004 at age 100.
Margaret was an active worshiper and worker in the First Congregational Church of Cornwall, belonging to the churchs Whatsoever Society. She was also a member of the Cornwall Home Demonstration Club and the Cornwall Grange. Margaret was an ardent gardener and taught her grandchildren about plants and nature. Exploring family history was another love she passed on.
Margaret always had time for her family and friends and will be greatly missed by them. Her family thanks all those at the Helen Porter Nursing Home who worked so hard to make her last years comfortable.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday February 5, 2006 at 2 PM at the First Congregational Church, in Cornwall.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Margaret may be made to the First Congregational Church of Cornwall in care of Charlotte Phillips at P.O. Box 907 Middlebury, VT 05753.
