MIDDLEBURY - Katherine Schindler Teetor departed this life on November 29, 2012 at Eastview of Middlebury, a retirement community. After a series of small strokes, she fell into a deep sleep and slipped away peacefully with her children at her side. She is survived by daughter Katherine Teetor Bowen of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and son Paul Robert (Anna Speicher) Teetor of Elgin, Illinois; and six grandchildren: Matthew, Peter, and Diana Bowen, and Nathan, Everett, and Jackson Teetor. Also surviving are brother Robert Schindler of Glenview, Wisconsin; brother-in-law Stephen Teetor of Poultney, Vermont; and nephews Bill Schindler, David (Pat) Schindler, Mark (Mary Jo) Teetor, Douglas (Rosie) Teetor and Paul Teetor and niece Nomeca Hartwell. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Paul Raymond Teetor; by loving parents, Robert A. Schindler of Schwyz, Switzerland and Katherine Pabst Schindler of Heidelberg, Germany; and by an infant son. Katherine was born in West Allis, Wisconsin in 1923. Her early schooling was completed at West Allis High School. She entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison, becoming the first woman president of the student council and graduating in 1944. She began studies at the Columbia University Law School, New York City, but interrupted them to become a dedicated wife and mother. Together with her husband, she moved to Vermont where she gave birth to three children. Their residence in Vermont included time in Putney and Middlebury as well as several years in Rutland during which her husband served in the Korean War. They subsequently moved to Berkeley, California, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Larchmont, New York, and Bethesda, Maryland in pursuit of his career opportunities. They retired to Middlebury, fulfilling a long desire of theirs to return to Vermont. In later years, summers were spent at Thompsons Point, Charlotte, Vermont where they owned a cottage and enjoyed a wide circle of friends and activities. Katherine was an accomplished writer, producing the books A Walk Around the Mountain and The Historic Thompsons Point Fishing Ground with Morris Glenn, along with numerous articles, columns, and letters to the editor. She was an avid member of and contributor to many civic organizations, including the Ferrisburg Historical Society, the Charlotte Historical Society, the Sheldon Museum, the Lake Champlain Committee, the Charlotte Tree Fund, the Wyoming Heritage Society, the West Allis Historical Society and the Middlebury Town Hall Theater. She was a proud member of the Hawthorne Club and the Middlebury Smallholders as well as a member of St. Stephens Church in Middlebury. Her estate will endow the Robert A. Pierattini Green and Gold Professorship in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Vermont College of Medicine. In accordance with her desires, there will be no public memorial service. Contributions in her memory may be made to The Lake Champlain Committee, 208 Flynn Avenue, Building 3, Studio F, Burlington, Vermont. Her family also wants to express a deep gratitude for the extraordinary care of the EastView staff as well as Addison County Home Health and Hospice.
