Obituary

Katherine Smyth Duffy (Kaye) of East View at Middlebury, Vermont, died at her home on September 7, 2015. Born January 1, 1929 she was the daughter of James P. and Estelle Quinlan Smyth of Northport, Long Island, New York. Mrs. Duffy graduated from Northport High School in 1946 and Cortland State Teachers College in 1949, and received her masters degree from Columbia Teachers College in 1954. She taught in schools on Long Island. She married John Lester Duffy, MD (Jack) on June 21, 1952, at St. Philip Neri Church in Northport. His parents were Lester M. and Mildred Aitken Duffy, also of Northport. The Duffys lived in Northport and Laurel Hollow, NY before moving to Orwell, VT in 1989. Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Q. Duffy of Rockville, MD, and her fianc Eugene Spencer Clark II of Raleigh, NC; her son John A. and his wife Kristine D. Duffy of Queensbury, NY; her son-in-law David H. Bain of Orwell, VT; and her grandchildren Mildred A. Bain (Mimi), David M. Bain, John W. Duffy (Jack), and Sean A. Duffy. Her sister Estelle Smyth von Alt, also of East View, survives as do numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Duffy was predeceased by her husband, and by her daughter Mary Smyth Duffy of Orwell, her sister Isabelle Smyth Mahurin and brothers James P. and Joseph C. Smyth, all of California. Mrs. Duffy was a member of St. Pauls Church, the Orwell 60+ Club, the Mount Independence Coalition and the Orwell and Northport Historical Societies. Her family, education, the welfare of children, and all of nature were Mrs. Duffys prime interests. Viewing will take place from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 10 at Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home in Middlebury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pauls Church in Orwell at 1:00 pm on Friday, September 11, followed by burial at Mountain View Cemetery, also in Orwell.
