June Behrens Sauer
June passed away April 8, 2014 after a short illness. She had been living at The Lodge at Otter Creek in Middlebury, Vermont for the past five years. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (Tricia) Sauer Kules and Bill Kules, of Stowe, Vermont, her son, Scott Sauer of Hamilton, Montana, her two grandchildren, H. Neil Sauer and Gretchen Sauer, her great-grandson Ari Salmonson, her sister-in-law, Wini Behrens of Old Chatham, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews.
June was born on July 6, 1925 to Henry and Alice Behrens in Brooklyn, NY. She grew up in Jamaica Estates, Long Island, New York where she enjoyed her pony, Toy Boy, tumbling, and Luther League. When she was 15, long before bicycle touring was popular, June and her friend Margie took a month long bicycle tour through New England. While at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, she participated in an a cappella group and received a Bachelors degree in business. After her marriage to Donald H. Sauer in 1947, she taught high school business classes in Cortland, NY. Later, she worked as the office manager for the C.D. Murray Co. while they built East and West Lake Roads in Skaneateles, NY. Don was the supervisor for those projects.
Her family was the most important part of her life. She was devoted to Don, her husband of 65 years, who passed away in 2012. She often talked about the farm life that Don introduced her to in Toad Harbor, NY along with the love and humor that went with it. Two of Junes favorite Toad Harbor stories were when she learned to drive on a steel wheeled farm tractor and riding on top of the hay wagon.
June and Don spent 55 wonderful years in the same home on East Lake Road in Skaneateles. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, and an active member of the Garden Club, having won many awards for her creative flower arrangements. She was an outstanding seamstress and artist, enjoyed cooking, bowling, singing, and was passionate about golf and her friends. Most who knew June remember her unique and frequent laugh, and her saddle shoes.
A graveside service is planned at 11:00 a.m. on May 31, 2014 at Hastings Cemetery on Route 11, a few miles north of Central Square, NY.
Cards may be sent to The Sauer Family, c/o Tricia Kules, PO Box 1147, Stowe, VT 05672, and contributions in Junes memory may be made to The Skaneateles Historical Society, 28 Hannum Street, Skaneateles, NY 13152.
