Joan Louise Greiner, 86, a longtime physical education professor and coach at Middlebury College, died peacefully on July 21, 2016, at Eastview in Middlebury with family by her side.
She was born on Aug. 2, 1929, in Haverhill, MA, the daughter of Edwin G. and Margaret Towne.
She studied at Westbrook Junior College and graduated from Skidmore College. She received a master's of science in physical education from Smith College in 1958.
Throughout her youth and college, she was an accomplished athlete, and competed in skiing throughout the United States.
She began her teaching career at Centenary Junior College in 1958 and went on to teach four years at Colby-Sawyer and two years at Skidmore. She began working at Middlebury College in 1960.
During her 28 years at Middlebury, she taught 20 different courses, ranging from CPR to archery to skiing and synchronized swimming. As co-director of the Middlebury Snow Bowl Ski School for 10 years, she established the popular Junior Ski Program. In addition, she was the Brown Pool director for 14 years and coached the womens tennis team for 10 years. She also volunteered for the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association for many years.
In 1976, she married local veterinarian Arthur Greiner in Cornwall, and they lived in Middlebury. Upon their retirement in the late 1980s, they traveled extensively, especially on their sailboat, "Waif," along the Intracoastal Waterway, and to California and back in a camping trailer. They later split their time between Middlebury and Beaufort, SC.
Upon Art's death in 2000, Joan returned full-time to Middlebury where she enjoyed volunteering at Porter Hospital, many meals out with friends and former colleagues, and watching her grandchildren grow into young adults.
In addition to Art, she was predeceased by her brother, Tony Towne, and a stepdaughter, the Rev. Lee Devoe Greiner. She is survived by two stepdaughters and their husbands, Michael Ann Greiner and Jim Muller of Underhill, and Mary and Peter Conlon of Cornwall; and seven grandchildren, Jamaica Burns Griffin and her husband, Ferron, of Bethel, Ben Burns and his wife, Jennifer, of Dover, NH, Eliza Burns of Bethel, Emerson Conlon of Chicago, William and Silas Conlon of Cornwall, and David Glidden of Underhill; and two great-grandchildren.
