Jane Durando Miller, 94, resident of Middlebury, Vermont died on December 10 at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury after a brief illness. She was born on June 7, 1921, a daughter of Frederick Miller and Margurite Crosby. She was predeceased by her parents and by her brother, Edmund G. Miller.
Jane was brought up in Pelham, New York, graduated from Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut, and attended Sara Lawrence College. During World War II Jane had what she often described as the greatest adventure of her life, serving as a Red Cross girl in England, France and Austria in the last years of the war and into the early Occupation. After the war she began a distinguished career in merchandising, specializing in womens clothes. Janes career took her to I. Magnin in San Francisco, where she became a buyer and made many trips to Paris and Milan on behalf of the store. Later, she worked for Abercrombie and Fitch first in Rochester, New York, and then in New York City.
After her retirement to Middlebury in 1988, Jane became very interested in local affairs, especially in the preservation of historic buildings around town. She was a member of the Sheldon Museum, Friends of the Arts of Middlebury College and the Middlebury Garden Club. She also took great pride in her New York City roots and was active in the philanthropic work of the Daughters of Cincinnatus. A firm anglophile, her larger interests included an extensive knowledge of between-the-wars English literary personalities and the history of English national parks and country houses.
All who knew Jane will deeply miss her feisty and empathetic personality, keen sense of humor and abiding interest in the lives of those around her. She took great delight in living in the midst of town where she could interact with friends and neighbors of all ages, and their support, in turn, enabled her to live in her house until the end of her life. She leaves a niece, Sophia A. Miller, a nephew, Edmund G. Miller Jr. and two great-nephews, David and Hayden Bowen, and many devoted friends. A service of celebration of her life will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Middlebury on December 30, 2015 at 1 p.m.
