Salisbury-James McNulla Halnon, beloved husband of Ann, and lifetime resident of Salisbury, died at the age of 90 on Sunday, December 20, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, in Burlington, Vermont. Jim was born on the family farm in Salisbury on March 26, 1919, the youngest of Frank and Sarah (McNulla) Halnons nine children.
After attending the one room Salisbury Superior School, he went on to Middlebury High School where he was the president of his class, graduating in 1936. In July 1941, he joined the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Flying Cadet, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on May 21, 1942. He served in North Africa as a bombardier on anti-submarine patrol, and received the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he returned to the family farm and married Ann McGuinness on October 18, 1947. Together they raised a family of five children and Jim began his 38 year career as the rural mail carrier for the Town of Salisbury. He remained active in the Air Force Reserves and was promoted to Lt. Colonel. He was assigned to Andrews Air Force Base and served as the liaison to the Vermont Adjutant General. He was a lifetime member of St. Marys Catholic Church where for many years he sang with the choir, served as a lector and usher; and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and served as President of the Vermont Rural Letter Carriers Association. Jims lifetime interest in education extended in many directions, even so far as attending classes during his retirement at Middlebury College along with his oldest grandson. He and Ann enjoyed numerous trips to Ireland, and he enjoyed golf, his gardens and maple sugaring. He was a devoted father and grandfather.
He is survived by Ann, his wife of 62 years, their children Jim and Sheila Halnon, Peggy and Bud McCollum, Terry and Bob Johnson, Tom and Robin Halnon, and Maureen and David Wheeler; and twelve grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Francis, William, John, Howard and Leonard, and sisters, Sarah Wissell, Agnes Murphy and Dorothy Witherell.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 11 AM with the Rev. Brian ODonnell, Parochial Vicar as celebrant.
The family will receive friends at the Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, 117 South Main St. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 from 6-8 PM. Spring burial with military honors will take place at St. Marys Cemetery.
