Obituary

Hubbardton, VT - Harry Arthur Allison, 84, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2006 at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, VT. Mr. Allison was born and raised in Fort Lee, New Jersey on June 1, 1922, the son of Fred and Minnie (Woener) Allison. He graduated from Fort Lee High School in 1939, then attended the Horace Mann School for Boys in New York for a post graduate year. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master's degree in Education from Columbia College in New York. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 - 1945 as a B-17 pilot. He returned to his beloved Horace Mann School to teach in 1947 and remained for 45 years never missing a day of school. In addition to his teaching responsibilities as a U.S. History Teacher, he also coached soccer and baseball, served as Director of Admissions for 25 years, and was Head of the Lower School for most of his career. He took students on many trips to Washington, D.C., Virginia, and to his Vermont home for skiing and summer camp for 30 years. As a young athlete, he received scholarships to play baseball and basketball and was scouted by the Yankees. He was a faithful Boston Red Sox fan after the Yankees traded Babe Ruth to Boston. He was a true devote to baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, and tennis. He married the former Eleanor Haff in 1951 and lived in Demarest, N.J. with his wife and four children until 1964 when the family moved to Wilton, C.T. Mr. and Mrs. Allison retired from teaching in 1991 living in both Vermont and Florida. An avid woodworker, Mr. Allison built many pieces of furniture and grandfather clocks for friends and family, his most recent love making mantle clocks. He is survived by his son Paul of Bolton, V.T., his daughter Nancy and son-in-law Arlen Grossman of Monterey, C.A., and his daughter and son-in-law Anne and Joseph Severy of Cornwall, V.T. He leaves six grandchildren: Erin, Nathaniel, Gabriel, Ellie Severy and Jeffrey and Corinne Grossman. He was predeceased in 2004 by his son David and in 2005 by his wife Eleanor. Mr. Allison was a devoted parishioner and teacher. Therefore, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Congregational Church of Cornwall, V.T., or to the Horace Mann School in the Bronx, N.Y. Dad will be sorely missed by all. This kind, considerate, loving, and extremely outgoing man meant so much to so many. We shall all miss his generous laugh and will love him forever. The burial will be private. A memorial service open to all will occur on July 8th, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Cornwall on Route 30 in Cornwall, V.T.
