Obituary

Bristol, Harold J. Butler Harold J. Butler, 88, died Saturday evening October 24, 2009 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. He was born August 13, 1921 in Starksboro, VT the son of the late William & Edith (Emerson) Butler. Harold served 3 years in the United States Army serving in World War II. He began farming after the service and has been farming for 63 years in Bristol. He married Avis Warren February 20, 1949 in Bristol; they just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Harolds passion was Elk hunting in western Montana with his family. He enjoyed Ice fishing, snowmobiling and being on Lake Dunmore at their camp. He was active in maple sugaring and running his sawmill. His family enjoyed gathering on Monkton Pond and Little Ireland. Survivors include his wife Avis, of Bristol, his children, Jerry Butler & his wife Bernadine, of Bristol, Larry Butler & his wife Lee Ann, of New Haven, Janet Piper & her husband Dennis, of Bridport, Judy Stegner & her husband Michael, of Happy Valley, OR, and Jayne Marsh & her husband Robert, of Cumberland, ME, also by his grandchildren, Alexis Lathrop, of Bristol, Calihan Butler, of Bristol, Jeromy Piper, of Bridport, Melinda Piper, of North Clarendon, Crissandra Jarrett, of Fowlerville, MI, Brian Stegner, of Milwaukie, OR, Darren Stegner, of Snowqualmie, WA, Jason Stegner, of Gresham, OR, Tera Stegner, of Corvallis, OR, Travis Marsh, of Portland, ME and Austin Marsh, of Jamaica Plains, MA, his 6 great grandchildren, his sister, Bertha Sherman and brothers Arthur & Ralph Butler, by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Lawrence who died 10 hours earlier, and his sister Dorothy Lafountain. A memorial service will be held on Thursday October 29, 2009 at 11 AM at Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home located at 117 South Main Street Middlebury. The Rev Stephen Payne will officiate. A reception will follow the service at the home of Jerry & Bernadine in Bristol. Donations may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home 325 North Street Bennington, VT 05201.
