GRACE BARBERIS
BRIDPORT- Grace Candace (Hawkins) Barberis, 77, died Saturday, June 12, 2010 at her home.
Born in Middlebury November 5, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Everett A. and Alice L. (Goodrich) Hawkins.
Grace was a graduate of Vergennes High School, class of 1951 and Vermont College, Montpelier in 1953.
She had resided in Bridport since 1991, coming from Middlebury. She was a catalog assistant at Middlebury College Library prior to her retirement in 1991 after 38 years of employment.
Grace was a member of the Congregational Church of Middlebury where she was in the Womans Fellowship and served as secretary. She served as deaconess and worked at church bazaars, diners and luncheons.
Grace served on various political committees including Addison County Young Republicans, Vermont State Young Republicans Committee, Middlebury Republican Committee, Addison County Republican Committee and Vermont State Republican Committee She was a Justice of the Peace in Middlebury.
She was a life member of the Ferrisburgh Grange, Stoddard Pomona Grange, Vermont State Grange and National Grange.
She was listed in Whos Who in American Politics. She was named Bridport Homemaker of the year in 1995. She served on Addison County Cancer Association, American Red Cross, and Porter Hospital Womens Auxiliary.
Grace was a member of Middlebury Community Chorus, and was a director of Middlebury Land Trust. She was a director of Addison County Chamber of Commerce and co-chaired the home and garden show for three years.
She volunteered at Robert Hall Fleming Museum, the Sheldon Museum, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Vergennes Chamber, and Addison County Teens.
Grace enjoyed the companionship of her dogs. She traveled to Europe, Canada and the Maritime Provinces as well as throughout the United States.

Family members include two stepsons, Dr. Carl L. Barberis of Ridgewood, NY and John P. Barberis of Boulder, CO.; cousins, Helen Cobb of Ferrisburgh, and Phyllis Rockwell of North Clarendon; and two step grandchildren, Alexander and Nicole Barberis.
Grace was predeceased by her husband, Daniel J. Barberis on November 24, 2005.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday at the Congregational Church of Middlebury with the Rev. Andrew Nagy-Benson, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall with burial to take place at Gage Cemetery, Ferrisburgh at 2 PM Thursday. .
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Congregational Church of Middlebury or to Addison County Humane Society.
