Obituary

George E. West Jr. (Westy) beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather passed from this life on April 5, 2008. George was born on July 29, 1924 in Milton, MA, son of George E and Constance (Youngquist) West. He attended Quincy Schools, advancing to Tufts College where he was enrolled in the ROTC program, and subsequently served in the Korean War as an Ensign in the Navy, retiring as Lt. Commander. While at Tufts he met and married his Cookie, Shirley Heitman a student of Jackson College and native of Shoreham, Vt. They initially lived in Schenectady NY, then settling in Abington, MA to raise their children. He supported his family with work as a mechanical engineer at Stone & Webster in Boston, then also at MIT. His career progressed to include the title of Director of Physical Plant of Tufts University in Sommerville, MA and also Northfield Mount Herman School in Northfield, MA. He and Shirley retired in 1991 to Shoreham, VT and they spent their winters in Venice, Florida. During his retirement, he was an active Masonic Lodge member, on the Solid Waste Management Committee, was a lister for the local assessors office and was faithfully committed to his church family at the Shoreham Congregational Church. George is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Shirley (Heitman) West of Shoreham; daughter Kathryn and her husband John Ciovacco of Schenectady, New York and their children Maren, Michaela, Maxamillian; daughter Janis and her husband Paul Donlan of Abington, MA and their children Briana, Maura and Corey; son Steven and his wife Irene, and their children Grandey and Jared. He also was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Ian and Juliette West. He also leaves behind his loving sisters, Joycelynn Nelson of Nokomis, Florida; Helene Meehl of Abington, MA; and Carol Marcello and her husband Dr. David Marcello of Marion, MA; also many loved nieces and nephews. Georges perfect day would include sailing on Quincy Bay or Lake Champlain, tending to his vegetable garden, solving a challenging problem and reciting United States history anecdotes to his captive family audience. A service will be held on Tuesday April 8th, 2008 at 10 am at the Shoreham Congregational Church with Pastor Deborah Roy officiating. All are welcome to attend the service, to be followed by a pancake brunch provided by the Masonic Morning Sun Lodge #5. Future plans for a memorial service in Abington, MA his home of 30 years will be scheduled in the late spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shoreham Congregational Church or the Town of Shoreham Flag Fund in his memory.
