Salisbury-George C. Devoid, 89, died peacefully at his home on July 13th. He was born July 22, 1922 in Monkton the oldest Son of H. Claude Devoid and Louise LaFlam.
George and his family moved to Salisbury in 1936. After being denied entry into the service for medical reasons, he moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut to build Corsair Fighter planes during WW II. He later returned to Salisbury and peddled milk for Palmers Dairy. On April 24, 1946 George purchased a small farm and the following year married Lois H. Niles, a school teacher from West Salisbury. He added Salisbury school bus driver to his resume and Lois added Town clerk to hers as together with their children they grew the Farm business from 1 Jersey cow and 200 hens, delivering eggs, butter & cheese on a bicycle around Lake Dunmore; to what is now known as Maple Meadow Farm housing 70,000 hens delivering eggs and Maple Syrup all over the State, currently the largest egg producer in Vermont. George & his family were well known for the Chicken BBQs they put on for large events throughout the State, cooking for President Eisenhower at the VT State Fair and celebrities at Camp Keewaydin. He was a lifetime member of St. Pauls Lodge # 25 F & A.M., a former president of the Vermont Farm Bureau,
He loved being a part of the farm well after retirement age. He and Lois enjoyed traveling and spending time with family at their camp on Lake Dunmore. In May of this year George was proud to be a 1929er, an honorary Grand Marshall at the opening of the new Champlain Bridge, having been present at the opening of the previous Champlain Bridge in 1929.
He is survived by sisters Barbara Laduc of Orwell and Margaret Hayes of Middlebury, his children Anne Filion and her husband Jon, Nancy Jewett, George E. Devoid and his wife Jackie all of Salisbury, his grandchildren Andy Filion and his wife Dana of Burlington, Bethany Hallock and her husband Gary of Ferrisburg, Jennifer Sheldrick and her husband George of Salisbury, Niles Devoid of New Haven, five great grandchildren and his feline companion Susie.
He was predeceased by his wife Lois, his sister June Carlton, his brother Bill Devoid and his granddaughter Jamie Devoid.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6-8 PM at Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, 117 South Main Street, Middlebury. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 PM at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Middlebury.
