Fred E. Spencer, Jr, 91 passed away at the Helen Porter Health Care and Rehabilitation facility on Sept 27, 2016. Fred was born on April 22, 1925 in Bellows Falls, VT to Fred and Myrtle (Daggett) Spencer Sr.
During his lifetime Fred worked for Campus Security at Dartmouth College until moving to Middlebury in 1968 where he continued his career as the Director of Security at Middlebury College serving as Security Chief until his retirement in 1988.
For more than 50 years Fred was a Master Mason with Union Lodge # 2 F & A.M. of Middlebury and an active member of the Shriners International Fraternal Organization, belonging to the Cairo Temple of Rutland, VT, as a member of the Cycle Corps and in later years, the Mini Monster Unit. Fred loved parading with the Shriners, riding his Harley Davidson in the Cycle Corps, and later his Mini-Monster truck that kids young and old enjoyed. After retiring from Middlebury College, Fred continued to work part time as a volunteer driver bringing people needing rides to their doctors appointments, and elsewhere as needed. He worked part time for Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury, and Brown and McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Fred was a member of the Champlain Valley Fiddlers Association and regularly went to the weekly events, dancing and enjoying the special music they all loved.
Fred is survived by his wife of 69 years Nellie (Hale) Spencer, his daughter Alice George, and her husband Dean George of Middlebury, VT, his son Wayne Spencer of Middlebury, Vt, his three grandsons, Dean S. George and wife Stefanie of Rochester Hills, MI, Scott Spencer and his Partner Sarah English of Orwell, Vt, Gerald Spencer, and his wife Deandra also of Orwell, VT., and four Great grandchildren, Elyssa George, Raegan Spencer, Connor Spencer, and Gavin Spencer.
Visitation will be on Friday October 7 from 1 PM to 2PM, with a funeral service to follow at 2PM at the Sanderson Funeral Home on 117 South Main St., Middlebury, with the Rev. Matthew Wollam-Barens officiating.
In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Homeward Bound at 236 Boardman St. in Middlebury, Vt. in Freds behalf.
