ELINOR W. PIKE Centenarian PITTSFORD - Elinor Willard Pike, 101, a lifelong summer resident and longtime resident died Wednesday evening, June 18, 2014 at the Lodge at Otter Creek, Middlebury where she had resided for the past two and a half years. Born in Boston, MA. January 24, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Harrington and Margaret (Willard) Pike. Elinor was a graduate of Brookline High School, Brookline, MA and Bouv Boston School of Physical Education, class of 1933, now a part of Northeastern University. Elinor began her teaching career at Science Hill, a highly respected college preparatory school for girls, located in Shelbyville, KY. In her words, I felt a need to be near family so I took a teaching position at Bancroft School in Worcester, MA for what I thought would be a year or two. Forty three years later I retired from Bancroft. At Bancroft she became a much loved instructor where she positively affected the lives of many youth. During her teaching years she held various positions at Bancroft and made many lifelong friends among students, parents and faculty. She did extensive world travels during her teaching years, was an accomplished brook trout fisher woman and enjoyed life in every situation. In retirement years she enjoyed volunteering at Rutland County Humane Society and McClure Library, playing bridge and Bingo. She was a former member of Pittsford Historical Society and a member of the former Pittsford Womans Club. Surviving family members include several cousins including Margaret Peggy Willard Armitage of Pittsford and her sons, Peter Armitage of Providence, RI and John Armitage of Chittenden, Marie Willard Walton and her husband Clyde A. Walton of Pittsford, Richard Rand Willard and his wife Veronica of Somersworth, NH, John Harrington Willard of Dover, NH and Barbara Hillsgrove of South Berwick, ME. She was predeceased by her parents; cousins; and a teacher friend, Miss Katherine E. Vanarsdell of Mount Sterling, KY. Relatives and friends may call Friday June 20, 2014 from 2-5 PM at Barnard Funeral Home, Pittsford. Private burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Pittsford.
