Obituary

Elbert Dickerson Dick Nostrand, 86, died Wednesday morning April 15, 2015 at EastView Residential Care in Middlebury, with his wife by his side. Born September 25, 1928 in Honolulu Hawaii he was the son of the late Elbert A. and Ruth (Dickerson) Nostrand. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1946 and from University of Vermont in 1950. He received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from University of Rochester in 1954. He took a job with Exxon Chemical Company and stayed with the company his entire career, beginning as a physical chemist and eventually becoming head of worldwide marketing for the chemical division of Exxon. He had many exciting jobs within the company and relished his travels around the world and interacting with people from different cultures. He held numerous patents. In 1952 he married Mary Patsy Schweyer of Burlington and together they raised three children, living in New Jersey, Oklahoma and Texas. He spent every summer at his beloved camp on Lake Champlain in Grand Isle, Vermont where he spent long hours sailing, swimming and relaxing with the company of his extended family. He was an avid tennis player and all-around athlete, and enjoyed reading, music, history, geography, and sports. Dick had an incredible mind and he was well-versed in topics ranging from astronomy to classical music. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Patsy Nostrand of Middlebury; daughter Susan Boston and her husband David of Woodstock VT; son Peter Nostrand and his wife Kristen of Santa Barbara, CA; and son Ben Nostrand and his wife Susan of Charlotte, VT. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
