Obituary

Middlebury--Edgar Butterfield, Sr. died Saturday, November 21, 2009, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury with his family by his side. He was just 13 days shy of his 101st birthday. Edgar Willis Butterfield, Sr., was born December 4, 1908, in Stockbridge, Vermont, the son of Willis Edgar and Jessie (Estabrook) Butterfield. He lived in Stockbridge, Sherburne, and Randolph Center, VT where he graduated from Vermont State Agricultural School (now called Vermont Technical College) in 1931. He farmed with his father in Randolph Center before buying his farm on Munger Street in 1943. Prior to farming, Edgar was a long distance driver hauling eggs and furniture for Swain's Express. Edgar met his wife, the former Irene F. Luce, at a square dance and they frequented area square dances thereafter. They were married on August 17, 1946, and enjoyed 57 years of married life. She predeceased him in February, 2004. Edgar was very well known for his involvement with Addison County Field Days where he was a director and event announcer for many years. The Butterfield Arena at Field Days used for pony, oxen, and horse pulling was named in his honor. He was proud to say that his grandson, Jeremie and his wife were married there in August, 2004. Edgar was also involved with 4-H in the area and he served on the VT State 4-H Foundation. He was a member of the Masons for 60 years. Mr. Butterfield is survived by his four children Elizabeth (Betty) Stowe and her husband, Roger of New Haven; Judith Pelletier and her husband, John, of Rockingham; Patricia Ryan and her husband, Matthew (Pat), of Whitehall, NY; and Edgar Butterfield, Jr and his wife, Sharon, of Middlebury. Eight grandchildren also survive: Ronae (Nile) Granger, Ross (Heather) Ryan, Matthew Ryan (fiancee Christina Roy), Jennifer and Sara Pelletier, Eric Butterfield (companion Jess Nielson), Jamie Butterfield (fiancee Andrea Thorpe), Jeremie Butterfield (Sabrina). Edgar had six great-grandchildren: Morgan and Wyatt Granger, Levi and Logan Ryan, Owen Butterfield and Sophie Butterfield. Edgar was predeceased by his brother Floyd Butterfield and three sisters, Ella Thompson, Lora Foote, and Jossie Morelli. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, November 24, from 6 to 9 pm at Sanderson Funeral Home on South Main Street in Middlebury. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 25, at 11 am at Middlebury Methodist Church with Reverend Jill Robinson officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol, VT.
