Obituary

David E. Lewis, born February 19th 1961, passed peacefully on September 9th, 2024 in his home following a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.

David was the only son, and youngest child, of Darce and Francis (Badore) Lewis. He was raised in Hinesburg, Vermont alongside his 4 sisters, Jean, Janet, Judy, and Darcelene. At a young age David took on many family support roles on their family farm while attending school. He was a hard worker. In 1979, after graduating from CVU, David joined the national guard with the 131st engineers. He was employed through the national guard until 1985 when he began working as a mechanic with Goodyear and then later Ford. In 1991, after an extended illness that left him unable to continue work as a mechanic, David became a full time foster parent and homeprovider for the State of Vermont. Work he continued until his death.

In 1975, David met the love of his life Gail Lavallee. They were married in 1981 and welcomed two biological children, and several foster children through the years, into their lives. In 1999 he moved their family to Ripton, VT. A new adventure complete with a budding maple grove. David and his family spent many years carrying buckets of maple sap up and down the side of the mountain, until David and Peter converted it to pipeline in later years. David was an fervent maple enthusiast, following trends and data daily, on and off season. His John Deere was his other child; he enjoyed every day spent logging and manicuring his 15 acres to encourage his maples to grow strong.

David loved watching his property and his family grow and was fiercely proud of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, marksman, and archer, spending many weekends with his family 3-D archery shooting, camping, and exploring the rivers, lakes and woods around the state where he was happiest. David taught his own children, grandchildren, and many other children, survival and hunting skills as well as basic life skills and very much enjoyed being a father, grandfather, and mentor.

David will be fondly remembered by family and friends for his booming laugh and love of the outdoors. David is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Gail Lewis, his son, Peter Lewis, his daughter, Robin Lewis, her partner Emmett Sheppard and their two children Marley and Waylon. David is also survived by his sister, Darcelene and her husband Michael Wedge, and several nieces and nephews. David is predeceased by his mother, Francis (Badore) and father, Darce Lewis, and 3 sisters, Jean Mobbs, Janet Price and Judy Fortin.

No public service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you plant a maple tree in memory of David or make a donation to the Make-a-Wish foundation in his name.
