Mr. Daniel Barberis 88, of Bridport died Thursday, November 24th 2005 at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.
Daniel was born May 20th, 1917 in New York, New York, Son of the late Ernest and Ida (Bardone)Barberis.
He worked in the Lithographic Trade in North Bennington, VT from 1950 to 1955, and then moved to River Vale Nj. He returned immediatly upon retirement to Middlebury in 1982.
Daniel was a Second Lieutenant with the Army Air Corp. 423rd Bomb Squadron 306th Bomb Group 8th Air Force. Daniel was a P.O.W. in WWII in Germany from July 1943 to April, 1945 and was credited with keeping morale up in the P.O.W. Camp. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, The Purple Heart Award and the American Defense Service Medal.
He was a Boy Scout and a member of the Congregational Church of Middlebury. Daniel was also actively involved in various wildlife foundations.
He was an avid bicyclist traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
Daniel was also known for his beautiful gardens and fresh vegetables which his neighbors were the welcome recipients.
Survivors include his wife Grace, of Bridport, two sons, Carl L. Barberis of Ridgewood, New York and John P. Barberis of Boulder Colorado. He is also survived by a brother Frank J. Barberis of Belton Missouri, two gandchildren, Alex and Nicole of Boulder and three cousins Edward Tatro, John Gotta and Enzio Bianchetto.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, December 11th, 2005 at the Congregational Church in Middlebury at 1pm.
