Obituary

Dalton S. Oliver, 86, died peacefully Friday, June 6, 2008 surrounded by his family at his home in Middlebury. He was born in Medina, Tennessee, January 8, 1922, to George W. and Maggie Lou (Cole) Oliver. The son and grandson of country doctors, he was graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1945. After practicing family medicine for 3 years in the coal-mining area of southeastern Kentucky, he obtained specialty training in ophthalmology at Harvard and Oxford Universities. He practiced ophthalmology in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 1954 until he retired at age 70 in 1992. He was also on the faculty of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans for fifteen years. In 1962 he served on the hospital ship HOPE in Peru. As president of the Delta Eye Foundation, he frequently travelled to Montserrat in the West Indies and Honduras to provide voluntary eye surgical care to a rural populace. In 2004 the Dalton S. Oliver Scholarship was established to honor promising students specializing in primary care at the LSU School of Medicine. From private in the Army during World War II, he rose to Major General in the Air Force Reserve, serving at the Pentagon as Reserve Assistant to the Surgeon General, and eventually becoming Assistant to the Chief of the Air Force Reserve. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with oak leaf cluster, and Air Forces Reserve Medal. A part-time and later full-time resident of Middlebury since the late 1970s, he served on the Board of Fellows and the Board of Trustees of Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont for many years. He was the first president of the Partridge Society, the Universitys development organization. In 1999 he established the Dalton Oliver Lectureship in the Humanities. A long-time Episcopalian, he was an active member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge, LA, and St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Middlebury. He also served on the Deployment Board of the National Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dorothy (Johnson) Oliver of Middlebury; three children by first wife Irene (Manning) Oliver: son Victor of Baton Rouge, LA; daughters Nancy Hutchinson of Coronado, CA; and Lucy Scheffy of Dallas, TX; and two daughters by second wife Dorothy: Amy Beaupre of Middlebury; and Jill Oliver of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by 3 stepdaughters: Sandra Bigner of Mebane, NC; Pam Davis of Middlebury; and Ann Solar of Baton Rouge, LA, as well as a niece, a nephew, 10 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by two brothers, Weldon and Wilbur Oliver. The funeral service was held Monday, June 9, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Middlebury, with the Reverend Terry Gleeson officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Medina, Tennessee, Saturday, June 14. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, P.O.
