Obituary

Christine N. Schafer, 95, died peacefully on Monday, Feb 1, 2021 surrounded by love. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Robert L. Schafer in 2015. She lived in Brewster, MA. Due to Covid, she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Daniel Kennelly, New Haven VT. Christine was born on Dec 22,1925 in Albany, NY to Claude and Anna (McHugh) Norton. She graduated from the College of St Rose with a degree in chemistry. After graduation she established the blood lab for the Red Cross in Buffalo, NY. While in Buffalo, at a post-Notre Dame football game gathering, she met Robert. Go Irish! Christine was an avid golfer and proud of her pewter trophies. Her name is on plaques for Women's 9 Hole Championship at both The Park Country Club, Amherst, NY and The Captains Golf Course, Brewster, MA. Christine made many life long friends wherever they lived, staying connected first through letters, then phone calls. She had a remarkable knack of remembering people, their connections (even generations), places and events. She was also a great organizer, earning the infamous Camp Director moniker. Christine is survived by her son William (Mary Jane) of Orchard Park, NY and her daughter Patricia (Daniel) of New Haven,VT and grandsons: Ryan Kennelly, Joseph and Benjamin Schafer; her sister, Elizabeth Casavant, St Albans, VT and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held on Feb 10 at 11am at St Mary's Church in Middlebury, VT. Burial will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery Buzzards Bay, to be with Robert, in the Spring.
