Charles H. Bascom Sr. 83, died Friday, December 9th, 2011 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
He was born November 6, 1928 in Charlestown, NH, the son of Merton Lee and Charlotte Nellie (Greene) Bascom. His maternal grandfather Charles H. Greene was a farmer and from an early age Charlie preferred the life of a farm boy to that of a town kid. He was educated in Charlestown, Langdon and Alstead schools. Until his grandfather's death in 1957, they lived and farmed together.
On Feb. 14th, 1954, he married Lois Eva Grant in Alstead, NH. She predeceased him in 1995.
Although Charlie had other jobs, He always considered himself a farmer. He was a member of the Green Mountain Draft Horse Assn., New England Ox Teamsters Assn., and the United States Trotting Assn. He enjoyed farm auctions, county fairs, visiting historical sites and taking day trips.
He is survived by his sons, Charles H. Bascom II and his wife Karmen of Royalton, Lynn M. Bascom of Middlebury and Lyle N. Bascom and Sue of Charlotte, a daughter Nancy Howe and husband Edward
Howe of Tunbridge: two brothers, Merton H. Bascom of Charlestown, NH and Thomas Bascom of Mesa, AZ, Two granddaughters: Karen and Katherine Bascom, a special sister-in-law, Roberta Young of Alstead, NH. and numerous other family members. He was predeceased by
his brother Orin Bascom in 1996.
Burial services will be held in the spring at the Farmingdale Cemetery in Middlebury.
A Time of Remembrance gathering will be held on Dec. 18, 2011 from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. at the Tunbridge Town Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to t he Addison County Meals on Wheels, or to your local Senior Meals program in memory of Charlie.
