In Loving Memory of Charlene Hier

Charlene Lydia Hazel Hier, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and caregiver, passed away surrounded by love on August 15th, 2026. She was born on July 17, 1952, to Marita (Kimball) and Henry Hier and was raised in Weybridge, Vermont.

Charlene was a graduate of Middlebury Union High School and Johnson State University. Throughout her life, she found meaning in caring for others. Her career reflected her generous heart and commitment to helping those around her. She worked at Project Independence, provided childcare in her home, served as a paraprofessional in local elementary schools, and concluded her career at the Counseling Service of Addison County.

She treasured her lifelong friendships with Marilyn, Shannon, and Mary Lou, including the cherished memory of Bonnie who passed years before her. These friendships remained an important part of her life.

Above all else, Charlene adored her family. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Heather & Jason; her grandchildren, Jordan and Dylan, Taylor and Zachary, and Michael and Lily; her brother, Terry, and his wife, Roberta; and her nephews, Geoff and Dustin. Charlene was predeceased by her parents, Marita and Henry Hier, and her partner, Roger.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the Palliative Care Team at Porter Hospital, especially Dr. Clare O'Grady, DO MPH, and Eliza Curtis, LICSW APHSW, for the compassionate, dignified, and loving care they provided to Charlene and her family.

We are especially grateful to Morgan, who went above and beyond with her kindness, compassion, and support. She brought comfort not only to Charlene, but to all of us who loved her. Although she was not Charlene’s family by blood, the love and care she gave made her family in every way that mattered.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to celebrate Charlene's life may make a donation in her memory to the Palliative Care/ARCH Fund at Porter Medical Center. Donations can be made through the UVM Health website by selecting Palliative Care/ARCH Fund from the menu:

Charlene's life was one of caring for others and loving her family. She leaves behind a lifetime of love that will remain with all who knew her. In keeping with Charlene’s wishes, there will be no formal services.
