CAROLINE LEHN GIEGES
SALISBURY, VTCaroline Katherine Lehn Gieges, 99, died peacefully at Shard Villa Nursing Home Thursday, June 5, 2008. She was born January 24, 1909 in Westport, Connecticut, the youngest of ten children to Edward and Caroline (Strock) Lehn.
Caroline received her Bachelors degree from Yale School of Nursing in 1933, the Universitys first class of nursing students. Her career included school nurse in Westport, Visiting Nurse with the CT Department of Public Health, and working with special needs students in Bridgeport and Danbury schools.
She spent twenty years of her retirement in Shoreham overlooking Richville Pond. There she spent her days tending bees, caning chairs, baking, and hosting family and friends. She was an active member in the Historical Society and church groups; she attended the Shoreham Congregational Church as well as St Stephens Episcopal Church in Middlebury.
Caroline migrated between Vermont and Connecticut throughout her retirement. In 2001 she settled at Shard Villa, where she simultaneously endeared herself to and drove to distraction the staff and volunteers.
Caroline is survived by her granddaughter Katie, of Cornwall, and nieces and nephews in Connecticut. Caroline was predeceased by her two children and ex-husband.
A gathering in Carolines honor will be held at Shard Villa on Saturday, June 21, 23pm. A memorial service will be held in Westport at Christ and Holy Trinity Church, followed by internment at Willowbrook Cemetery.
