Barbara J. Alden, 91, of Middlebury, Vermont, passed away peacefully on May 16 in Middlebury.
Barbara, known as Bobbie to her family and friends, was born in Jersey City, NJ on January 15, 1919 to William and Jane Hogan Plumer. As a young child the family moved to Westfield, NJ where she graduated from high school. Bobbie graduated from Middlebury College, with a B.A. in English in June of 1940, and was planning to attend her 70th college reunion in early June. At Middlebury Bobbie was a member of the womens tennis, ski and field hockey teams. She was also a member of Delta, Delta, Delta sorority.
During WWII, Bobbie taught English at Somerville (NJ) High School. In July of 1945, Bobbie married William (Bill) Galligan, and they raised their family of three children in Westfield, NJ. In 1972, Bobbie and Bill moved to Cornwall, VT. After Bills death in 1978, Bobbie moved to Middlebury, VT. While attending her 40th Middlebury College reunion, Bobbie met and fell in love with a fellow classmate, Robert (Bob) Alden. Bobbie and Bob were married in 1980 and enjoyed a wonderful life together - on bikes, on the tennis court, and attending Middlebury College events. They spent many summers together in West Dennis, MA.
Bobbie was active all of her life. She was an avid tennis player with a ferocious forehand who won numerous club championships. After her move to Vermont, Bobbie continued to play tennis until a year before her death. She also loved to ski and was a familiar sight on the cross country trails at Breadloaf. Bobbie was also a longtime member of the Middlebury Garden Club.
Bobbie is preceded in death by her parents, William and Jane Hogan Plumer, her sister, Dorothy Yeager, her first husband, Bill Galligan, and her second husband, Bob Alden.
She is survived by Sharon Galligan Johnson and her husband Bill of Cornwall, VT, Peter and his wife Marcy Galligan of West Rutland, VT, and Nancy Galligan of Parker, CO. Bobbie is also survived by six grandchildren: Helena Johnson of Catonsville, MD, Hilary Johnson of Boston, MA, Michael Galligan of Burlington, VT, Kate Galligan Schneider and her husband Dr. James Schneider of Watervliet, NY, Caleb Block of Parker, CO and Gabriel Block of Parker, CO. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Meigs Alden and his wife Alana of S. Dennis, MA, William Alden and his wife Sharon of Sarasota, FL, John Alden and his wife Chung of Indianapolis, IN and Rebecca Alden of W. Dennis, MA.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on June 2, 2010 at 1 PM at St. Marys Catholic Church, 326 College Street, in Middlebury, Vermont with the Rev. Brian ODonnell officiating. Burial will follow in St. Marys cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Middlebury College Womens Tennis Team, 5 Court Street, Middlebury, VT 05753.
