Obituary

Alfred W. Schermerhorn, 96, a nearly life-long resident of the Albany NY area, spending 65 years residing in Delmar NY, and Eastview of Middlebury in Vermont for the last 6, passed away on January 29, 2023. Al was born August 24, 1926 in Albany NY to William and Madeline (Wilson) Schermerhorn. He grew up on a farm in North Coeymans, NY, raised with his brother Richard by his foster parents Charles and Alice Kleinhans. As a junior in high school he enlisted with the Navy during WWII, where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam as a gunner. When he returned home he graduated from Ravena High. During this time he enjoyed volunteering as a basketball coach at the local Boys Club. He met the love of his life, Kathleen Cook, whom he lovingly nicknamed Kay, and they married September 18, 1948. Al and Kay made their home in Albany NY, moving to Delmar in 1958 to raise their 3 children. Al worked hard to build a career in the insurance business. He launched Alfred W. Schermerhorn Insurance Inc. and enjoyed his work until very late in life. He was a long time member of the Third Reformed Church in Albany where he was an Elder member of the consistory and served as Vice President. Other affiliations include New York State Insurance Agents Association, Albany Chamber of Commerce, Bethlehem Republican Club and a 70 year member of the Gutenberg Lodge #737-AFM. He was a member of the Aurania Club in Albany NY, where he served as president and several years as a bowling league champion. He was subsequently a member at the Winding Brook Country Club, Valatie NY and the Normanside Country Club in Delmar where he served two terms as President. Al deeply enjoyed spending time with friends and was an avid golfer and lifelong fan of the sport. Alfred also had a wonderful singing voice and was often tapped to sing at formal club events. In the late 60s and early 70s he took pride in announcing for Bethlehem Central High School football and basketball games where the team and fans - because of his 64" stature, affectionately called him "Big Al." He was known as the Voice of the Eagles. Later in life he also enjoyed membership in the Albany chapter of La Confrrie de la Chane des Rtisseurs. Al was well known, well loved, and will be missed by many. Alfred was preceded in death by his wife Kay Schermerhorn (September 1998); his brother, Richard Schermerhorn of Newburgh, NY.; and his parents, William Schermerhorn and Madeline Wilson and Alice and Charles Kleinhans. He is survived by his sister, Sandra Schermerhorn Burke; three daughters, Deborah Knight (Frank), Candace Schermerhorn (Eli Iskow) and Alyce Schermerhorn; two granddaughters, Zoe Makofske (Adam), and Olivia Cacciatore; and two great grandsons, Wesley and Casey Makofske; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family services will be held in the spring. Funeral preparations are handled by Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, Middlebury VT. Condolences may be sent to www.sandersonfuneralservice.com. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association or your local Hospice organization.
