MIDDLEBURY Albert W. Wedwaldt, 75, a longtime resident of Middlebury, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Rutland Regional Medical Center, Rutland.
Born in Balboa, Panama June 3, 1936, he was the oldest son of the late William A. and Anna (Bradney) Wedwaldt.
Al was a graduate of Wallingford High School, class of 1954, and honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1954 through 1958. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1962.
Al spent the majority of his career teaching Social Studies and History. In 1962 he began teaching in Moriah, NY, and then he moved to Middlebury to teach at Middlebury Union High School. He also coached basketball and baseball. Following his retirement in 1986, he was employed by Community Investment Counselors for several years.
Al was an avid fly fisherman and bird hunter; he loved nature. Travelling, with his family, was also a passion.He participated in the administration and growth of the Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association.
Above all, Al had a deep love for his family, his community and the State of Vermont.
He was a member of St. Marys Church.
Family members include his wife of 51 years, Charlene R. (Cook) Wedwaldt of Middlebury; two sons, Jeffery D. Wedwaldt and Charles R. Wedwaldt, both of New York City; one brother, Robert J. Wedwaldt of Cleveland, GA; two cousins, Katherine Egolf and William Egolf, both of Florida.
There will be no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at St. Marys Church with the Rev. William Beaudin, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery.
